As per the Hindu panchang, it falls on the third lunar day (Tithi) of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Vaishakh.

In 2024, Akshay Tritiya will be celebrated on May 10, 2024. The tithi will start at 4:17 AM on May 10, 2024 and will end at 2:50 AM on May 11, 2024.

In 2023, Akshay Tritiya held on 22nd April 2023.

Akshay Tritiya is an important day for Hindus as the day marks some of the very major events. To name a few here is a list of things that happened in Indian mythology which made this day extremely significant.

  • Parshuram Jayanti: This day is remembered as the Prakatya Diwas of Lord Vishnu in the form of Maharishi Parshuram. 
  • Goddess Annapurna: On this day Goddess Annapurna was born. 
  • River Ganga: According to the holy texts river Ganga descended on earth on Akshay Tritiya. There is great importance of Ganga snan on this day.
  • Jagganath Rath Yatra: On Akshay Tritiya of Vaishaka month, the construction of chariots began in Odisha, India for the very famous Jagannath Rath Yatra. Similarly, the Chandan Yatra festival begins in Vrindavan and continues for one month. 
  • Yuga Parivartan: According to Bhavishy Purana, on this pristine day Satyuga and Treta Yuga commenced. 
  • Change in season: This day is also the onset of Grishma Ritu and the end of Vasant Ritu.  
  • Badrinath darshan: On the eve of Akshay Tritiya in the month of Vaishaka, Badrinath temple opens its doors to devotees.
  • Banke Bihari: This day is also special as people visit Vrindavan for the divine Charan Darshan of lord Banke Bihari. 
  • Chandan Shringaar: On this day the divine Krishna enjoys the Chandan Shringaar all over his body. In many temples of brij (Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, Ramanreti etc) this is popular. As Akshay Tritya is the day when summer actually begins so devotees smear Krishna’s body with Chandan to provide him coolness. 

What to do on Akshay Tritiya?   

Akshay Tritiya is a propitious day in the Hindu calendar and is considered one of the most important days for performing various religious rituals and ceremonies. Here are some dos and don’ts that you can follow on Akshaya Tritiya:

Dos:

  • Wake up early in the morning and take a bath before sunrise.
  • Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Ganesha.
  • Donate water filled urn, kullad, sakora, barley, wheat, rice, gold, silver, jaggery, salt, ghee (clarified butter), kharbuja (muskmelon), cucumber, other fruits, eatables, clothes, footwear (slipper, khadau), fan (pankha), umbrella, saag, sattu, imli, sugar etc. It is highly beneficial for your family.
  • Perform Puja and offer prayers to Lord Kubera to seek his blessings for wealth and prosperity.
  • Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu with white lotus, yellow or white rose flowers. Do kirtan, Bhajan and recitation of other spiritual rhymes or songs. 
  • Wear new clothes and adorn yourself with jewelry.
  • Buy gold or other precious metals as it is believed that buying gold on Akshay Tritiya brings good luck and prosperity.
  • Good day to start a new journey as a professional, a new business, a travel, house-warming ceremony, new harvest season for farmers to attract good fortune and blessings of almighty. 
  • Day of celebration: All the good vibes gather in the universe, Akshay Tritiya is the finest day for wedding, engagements, pooja, spiritual functions or other family gatherings. 

Don’ts:

  • Avoid consuming non-vegetarian food or alcohol on this day.
  • Do not indulge in any kind of negative thoughts or actions.
  • Do not lend or borrow money on this day.
  • Avoid cutting your nails or hair on Akshay Tritiya as it is believed to bring bad luck.
  • Do not engage in any arguments or fights with anyone on this day.

Remember, anything you do (good or bad) on the Tritya of Shukla Paksha in Vaishakh month stays forever and returns the same result. So, be very careful while performing any act on this day.
