Introduction

Kumh Mela is an amalgamation of two words viz. KUMBH and MELA. Kumbh means the immortal pot of nectar. Mela refers to a grand gathering of people for a longer period of time.

Although, it is the largest religious human gathering. It is celebrated four times over the course of 12 years. The location of Kumbh Mela keeps on changing from one to another amongst four pilgrimage sites situated near holy rivers.These places are

  • Haridwar on the river Ganga in Uttrakhand.
  • Ujjain on the river Shipra in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Nashik on river Godavari in Maharashtra.
  • Prayagraj at the confluence of three rivers i.e. the Ganga, the Yamuna and the Saraswati in Uttar Pradesh.

Kumbh Mela is a 48 days long affair. Moreover, Kumbh Mela is a world’s largest Hindu event which has deep rooted spiritual significance.

History of Kumbh Mela

According to Puranas and Mahabharata, once Goddess Lakshmi left the Vaikunth Dham (abode of Shri Vishnu and Lakshmiji). She went to her father Maha Sagar. And, it was suggested that Samundra Manthan (churning of oceans) should be organised to call back Shree (goddess Lakshmi). All the demons and Devtas had this churning event for 12 days to have nectar of immortality. Goddess lakshmi came out of ocean with a pot (kumbh) of elixir.

Infact, it is believed that four drops of nectar of immortality fell on the above said locations.

These four places are believed to have maejstic powers. The 12 days of divine fight between Gods and demons are considered as 12 years for humans.

Apparently all the holy rivers are believed to have nectar in their water during the Mela. And, it is considered auspicious to take a holy dip in their water to get rid of all the sins.

Further, it is the biggest sacred Hindu event which has deep rooted spiritual heritage. It presents grand spiritual purification to the devotees, sadhus, sadhvis, ascetics and pilgrims come from all over the world.

Dates of Kumbh Mela

In 2025, we have Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh from January 14, 2025 to February 26, 2025. Although, it will start from Purnima of Pausha Mas.

First of all, Samundra Manthan was a biggest tug of war between Devtas and Demons. The safety of nectar of immortality lied in the hands of four gods. Brihaspati (Jupiter), Sun (Suryadev), Moon (Chandra Dev) and Shani (Saturn) were main protector.

Hence, dates and location of Kumbh Mela are always calculated on the basis of astrological position of these planets in Hindu panchang.

Types of Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela is the world’s largest congregation of religious pilgrims. It is classified into following categories.

Maha Kumbh Mela

Maha Kumbh Mela is considered to be once in a lifetime opportunity for all the Hindu devotees. It comes in once in every 144 years after 12 purn Kumbh Mela.

Namely, it was held last in 2013 and now will be after 144 years. Maha Kumbh Mela held in Prayagraj only.

Infact, it is believed that a devotee who takes a holy dip in holy river in Maha Kumbh Mela can relieve his ancestors back to eighty eighth generations from the evils and sins.

Purna Kumbh Mela

Purana Kumbh Mela held after every 12 years in Prayagraj. Devotees immerse in the Ganga, holy river of spiritual and religious significance.

Ardh Kumbh Mela

This held after every 6 years on all the four given locations. Although, the timings and place are defined as per the position of Jupiter and the Sun in Hindu lunar calender.

Magh Kumbh Mela

Specifically, Magh Kumbh Mela holds a great importance in Hinduism.As, it is linked with creation of the universe. It is held in prayagraj every year. We had Magh kumbh mela in Feb 2023. It falls in maagh mass of Hindu Panchang.

Rituals and Beliefs
