Spiritual Significance of Putrada Ekadashi

Potency and happiness are the two main boons one can get from this Ekadashi. However, observing fast and performing puja rituals on this day will manifest your wish to be happier, wealthier and parent soon. Certainly, the spiritual significance of this pious Ekadashi can be experienced as the transformative power.

Subsequently, on this auspicious day, there is a famous legend one should recite.

Katha

Once upon a time, there was a city named Bhadravati. In this city, lived a king named Suketuman, who was in a childless marriage with his wife named Shevya. They experienced unhappiness due to the absence of a child. The king, Suketuman, lived in constant worry and tension about not having a son.

One day, the king ventured into the jungle, where he observed animals and birds coexisting harmoniously without causing harm to each other. This sight left him amazed. Later in the day, feeling thirsty and hungry, he came across a sarovar (pond) and noticed rishimunis(sages) nearby.

Approaching the sages, the king inquired about the reason for their stay in the jungle. Vishvadev, one of the sages, explained that it was Putrada Ekadashi, and they were there to take a bath in the sarovar. The sages advised the king to perform puja and observe a fast on this auspicious day to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

Following their guidance, the king performed the puja and observed the vrat (fast). As a result, he was blessed with a son, putting an end to the sorrow of his childless marriage.

Rituals and observance of Putrada Ekadashi

  1. Firstly, wake up early. Have your bathing rituals.
  2. Secondly, place the idol or image of Hindu God Shri Vishnu on the top of the stool or a clean area covered with red coloured or yellow colored cloth.
  3. Also offer flowers, akshat, kumkum, chandan and light a diya infant of the idol.
  4. At the end, recite Vishnu Strota, Vishnu Sahasranam and perform bhajan kirtan throughout the day. It is advisable to end up your day long fast with fruits and milk products later in the day.

Contrarily, one is advised to not to indulge in any kind of addictive activities and refrain from consuming garlic, onion and rice on this ekadashi.

My perspective on Putrada Ekadashi

Putrada Ekadashi is an excellent opportunity to be blessed with a boy child. Why not a girl child? Although, when it come to religious belief people are given the name of fanatic.

However, I am a true Sanatani, and would love to clear the doubt of many people. Many blames Hinduism and its roots to make the society patriarch and male chauvinist. But, what I have read and observed throughout my life, is that Sanatana Dharma never propagates the concept of male chauvinism. Throughout the history, Sanatana Dharma celebrates the concept of Shakti, acknowledging the inherent power in both male and female energies. Infact, India has a history where a bachelor was address by his mother name like yashodha nandan, anajaniputra, kuntiputra etc and likewise after marriage their wives name added to their names like Sita Ram, Radhe Shyam etc. Likewise, girls were given names based on their father’s names, such as Janaki (daughter of King Janak), Draupadi (daughter of King Drupad), etc. To add more charisma to their existence and presence in the family, their father’s name was bestowed upon them.

Not only this, we had a system of allowing girl child to perform last rites of his deceased father as stated in 16 samskara in ancient texts. So, now you must have got the idea that these false defemations and blames are all peoples talking in the air.

It’s important to separate cultural misinterpretations from the essence of Sanatana Dharma, which embraces the harmonious coexistence of masculine and feminine energies, rather than promoting gender bias.

Conclusion

To sum up, I would recommend all the devotees and Shri Vishnu lover to perform puja and observe fast religiously and honestly not for only son but for a happier family who blooms with the laughter of kids at home.

Have a blessed time ahead. Keep growing with us.
