Similarly, Nirjala Ekadashi holds a valuable place like other ekadashis and falls on the 11th lunar day of Hindu calendar. This ekadashi derives its name from Nir (without) and Jala (water).

Story of Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi, also popular as Bhimsen Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi. This ekadashi fasting was observed by King Bhim (one of the Pandava brothers) on advice of Sage Ved Vyas.

The story is inspired from an incident from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Pandava Bhim was one of the five Pandava brothers. All his family members used to observe Ekadashi fasting every month. Whereas, he did not observe fasting as he could not control his hunger. Moreover, he was unable to stay without food even for a few hours. So, this made him sad as he was deprived of the benefits of Ekadashi fasting.

Therefore, he approached Sage Ved Vyas for a solution. Sage Vyas advised him to observe Nirjala Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. He told Bhim that by following the rules of this Ekadashi he can achieve the benefits of keeping all other ekadashis. On this advice, King Bhim strictly followed all the Nirjala Ekadashi rules and attained moksha at last.

Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi 2024

Date and Time

Nirjala Ekadashi 2024 tithi is starting 4:43 AM on 17 June and will end at 6:42 AM on 18 June 2024. Additionally, it is special due to its tithi during Shukla paksha (waxing moon) which falls during Jyeshtha month of Hindu panchang. Apparently it falls after Ganga Dussehra. Thus this special Ekadashi usually falls during the May or June month as per Gregorian calendar.

Besides, this year 2024 Nirjala Ekadashi fasting will be observed on 18 June 2024 and fasting will be broken on 19 June. Shubh Muhurat for Paaran of Ekadashi fasting will begin at 6:15 AM till 8:10 AM.

Dos & Don’t

In order to make the most from the upcoming Nirjala Ekadashi, one must strictly adhere to a few rules. So, here listed are some of the dos and don’ts of Nirjala Ekadashi fasting for devotees.

Dos for Nirjala Ekadashi

  • Wake up early in the morning (Brahma Muhurat), take a bath in a holy river and offer arghya (water) to sun god.
  • Wear yellow clothes and worship Lord Vishnu.
  • Offer yellow flowers, fruits, dhoop, deep, Tulsi dal and panchamrit to Lord Vishnu.
  • Recite mantras, shlokas and Lord Vishnu and goddess Lakshmi stotram.
  • Next day, after taking bath, worship Lord Vishnu and do daan (charity) of eatables, fruits, clothes, umbrella, footwear and other things.
  • At last, follow Paaran vidhi (eat food and drink water).

Don’ts for Nirjala Ekadashi

  • Do not eat rice on Ekadashi.
  • Also, do not eat onion, garlic, non-veg food or any alcoholic drink.
  • Avoid any physical relation with your spouse.
  • Do not pluck Tulsi dal on ekadashi. If necessary, pluck it a day before Ekadashi.
  • Further, do not indulge in any arguments and fights. Do not use bad words for anyone.
  • Try to control anger. Keep yourself calm and content by reciting Hari naam.
