Popularly called Parivartini Ekadashi, Jayanti Ekadashi and Vamana Ekadashi and Parsva Ekadashi in many parts of the country. This Ekadashi holds great importance as it falls in chaturmas (four months of deep slumber of Lord Vishnu).

Date of Parivartini Ekadashi

Apparently, we are going to celebrate this auspicious occasion on 14 September 2024. The Ekadashi tithi will start at 10:30 PM on September 13, 2024 and will end at 8:41 PM on September 14, 2024.

As per Hindu Panchang, this Ekadashi fall on 11th day of Shukla Paksha of Bhado or Bhadrpada mas.

Significance of Parivartini Ekadashi

Although, Parvartini Ekadashi holds immense significance in Hinduism as it falls in Chaturmas, Shri Hari sleeps for four months. Additionally, it is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu takes a turn from his left side to right side. Thus, it is called Parvartini Ekadashi.

However, as per ancient text and sages, this time is apt for religious activities like kirtan, Bhajan Sandhya, charity and meditation.

Moreover, Parivartini Ekadashi vrat blesses the devotees with wealth, happiness and health. One gets rid of all the sins and leads to salvation. If performed with full devotion, a devotee gets blessings of Lord Vishnu in abundance.

Which deity is worshipped on Parivartini Ekadashi?

Although, Lord Vishnu is presided as Vamana Awatar on this pious Ekadashi. As it is believed, that Vamana awatar is fifth awatar of Dhasam awatars of hindu god Shri Hari Vishnu on the Earth.

Vamana awatar of Shri Vishnu is described as dwarf size brahmin, wearing bhagwa clothes with Janeu and an umbrella.

Story of Parivartini Ekadashi

As per the ancient text, legend of Parivartini Ekadashi, once there was a demon named King Bali. He used to rule in the Treta Yuga. In Spite of his birth in Demon kul (family), he was religious and very charitable. Additionally, he was loyal and always served the people of his kingdom with great dedication.

King Bali also started ruling in heaven and replaced Devraj (king of Gods) Indra. On this, Devraj Indra and all the other gods got scared of King Bali. Therefore, all of them prayed to Lord Vishnu for the protection against him. Thus, Lord Vishnu took the Vamana avatar (5th avatar of Shri Vishnu Dasam Awatar) and went to King Bali. King Bali was performing a Havana, when Lord Vamana reached there. He requested King Bali to donate three steps of land to him. However, King Bali accepted this request of Vamana.

On this, Lord Vamana took a giant form and measured whole Universe in one step, Heaven in second step and for third step, he asked King Bali to where to keep his foot. Consequently, King Bali asked Lord Vamana to keep his foot over his head. And, after keeping foot over the head of King Bali, Lord Vamana was pleased with devotion and truthfulness of King Bali. Since, then this story is recited on Parivartini Ekadashi.

Rituals of Parivartini Ekadashi

  • A devotee should wake up early in the Brahma Muhurat.
  • Thenafter, finish your bathing rituals.
  • Clean your puja space and decorate the place with yellow coloured cloth and flowers.
  • Always palce an idol or image of Shri Hari Vishnu, over the top of stool or the puja place, decorated with yellow flowers or covered with yellow colored cloth .
  • Always do puja and start with light a diya, vermillion (roli), akshat (rice), sandalwood powder and panchamrit.
  • Recite Vishnu Sahastranama all though out the day.
  • Indulge in Kirtan and Bhajan of Shri Hari.
  • Avoid eating rice, cereals and alcoholic items.

Magical remedies to attract wealth and prosperity

Apart form these rituals, a devotee can also go for magical remedies to bring in happiness amd prosperity:

  1. Offer water to Peepal tree. And, light a diya with oil near the tree and circumambulate around the tree 11 times on this day.
  2. To get debt free, pluck a peepal leaf, write “Aum Namoh Bhagwate Vasudevaya Namah” on it with Haldi. Keep it under the feet of Lord Vishnu during Parivartini Ekadashi puja. At the end, keep this leaf at safe place at home.
  3. Donate black sesame seeds while reciting -Aum Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya namah.
  4. Do Jal Abhishekam of Lord Vishnu with kesar mixed milk in Dakshineswari Shankh (counch).
  5. Donate black coloured umbrella and shoes to needy people on this day.
