Ekadashi is the prime festival in Hinduism which is followed by devotees around the world. It falls twice in a month in (Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha) on the eleventh day as per Hindu calendar. There are a total 26 Ekadashi tithis that come in a year. Devshayani Ekadashi is one of the main Ekadashis in a year.

Devshayani Ekadashi tithiwill fall on 17 June 2024. Moreover the tithi will begin at 08:33 on July 16, 2024 and the tithi will end at 09:02 PM on July 17, 2024.
Additionally, the Parana Time will be from 06:12 AM to 08:42 AM on July 18, 2024.
Mythological Significance of Dev Shayani Ekadashi
Moreover, as per Hindu panchang, this auspicious day falls on the eleventh day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month of Ashadha. Devotees across India, particularly in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Orissa, observe this significant Ekadashi with great devotion. Significance of Dev Shayani Ekadashi for Devotees
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu is the preserver and sustainer of the universe. He goes into a deep sleep (Yog Nidra) for four months starting from Devashayani Ekadashi. It is believed that Lord Vishnu rests on the celestial serpent Shesha in the cosmic ocean of milk (Ksheer Sagar) during this period. This period is known as the Chaturmas which begins just from the day of Devshayani Ekadashi. During this period most celebrations or activities like house-warming, baby shower, wedding or other religious family gatherings are suspended. On the other hand, spiritual practices continue. As Lord Vishnu descends into his divine slumber, the responsibility of maintaining the universe falls into the hands of Lord Shiva.
Devotees observe Devashayani Ekadashi with utmost devotion and austerity. It is believed that fasting on this day and engaging in various religious activities can be extremely beneficial. This Ekadashi fasting can bring immense spiritual merits, forgiveness for sins, and a closer connection with Lord Vishnu. The fast begins on the Dashami (tenth day) and continues till the Dwadashi (twelfth day) of the month, spanning a duration of 48 hours.
Rituals and Observances
- Fasting: Devotees observe a strict fast on Devashayani Ekadashi. Some devotees abstain from food and water throughout the day, while others may consume fruits, milk, or a special type of Ekadashi meal known as “Phalahar” during the fasting period.
- Prayer and Bhajans: Devotees visit Lord Vishnu temples and offer prayers, recite hymns, and sing devotional songs (bhajans) to express their devotion and seek the blessings of the Lord.
- Reading Scriptures: Many devotees spend the day reading holy scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu Sahasranama, or the Ramayana, which are considered sacred texts associated with Lord Vishnu.
- Night Vigil: Some devotees stay awake throughout the night. They engage in devotional activities such as singing hymns, reciting prayers, and listening to discourses on Lord Vishnu’s divine virtues.
